Brown Mogotsi bail hearing postponed amid alleged escape plot
The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court has postponed the bail application for businessman Brown Mogotsi until 1 September 2026. The delay is intended to allow Correctional Services to provide a detailed report regarding an alleged escape plot.
According to an affidavit by investigating officer Colonel Alfred Odendaal, a correctional services official alerted police that Mogotsi allegedly planned to escape from court cells by disguising himself in a correctional official's uniform. In response to the tip, officials reportedly ordered Mogotsi to be removed from his transport vehicle and placed in leg irons to prevent an attempt to flee.
Mogotsi’s legal team is seeking bail based on what they describe as new facts, including the provision of a new verifiable residential address. The current application follows a previous bail denial in June, where the State cited concerns regarding non-cooperation, attempts to evade law enforcement, and the inability to establish a fixed address. The underlying charges against Mogotsi stem from an incident in Vosloorus in November 2025.
