Brussels officials respond to surge in gang violence and shootings

Brussels is facing a significant surge in violence, marked by recent shootings at a police station and a gang conflict in Sint-Gillis that forced restaurant patrons to seek cover. Reports indicate approximately 150 shooting incidents have occurred in the city over the past twelve months.

In response to the escalating insecurity, Minister-President Boris Dilliès convened a security council involving nineteen mayors and police chiefs. Discussions have shifted toward the necessity of a unified security zone led by a ‘Gold Commander’. Prosecutor Julien Moinil has also addressed the situation, highlighting the unacceptable risk posed to residents by stray bullets.

Political tensions remain high, with debates surrounding the responsibility of local versus federal authorities. Critics have pointed to long-standing issues in areas like Anderlecht and Molenbeek, where drug trafficking and lack of police presence have been noted as contributing factors to the instability.
