Brussels Prosecutor calls for institutional reform to fight drug trafficking

Julien Moinil, the King's Prosecutor for Brussels, has called for significant institutional reforms to combat rising drug trafficking. He highlighted the difficulties posed by the current fragmented structure of the capital, which consists of 19 separate municipalities and six different police zones.

Moinil suggested that having a single mayor for all of Brussels could improve efficiency, noting that while there is one prosecutor for all 19 communes, the current system of 19 mayors is complicated. He also advocated for consolidating the six police zones into a single unified force.

To address drug-related violence and shootings, the prosecutor proposed measures such as the potential use of military presence on the streets and the implementation of curfews in heavily affected neighborhoods. He also dismissed the legalization of cannabis as a viable solution to weaken traffickers, warning that Belgium faces a risk of becoming a ‘narco-state’ if more decisive action is not taken.
