Brussels prosecutors warn of rising gang violence

The Brussels prosecutor's office has issued an alarm regarding escalating firearm violence in the Belgian capital, attributed to territorial disputes between rival drug gangs. Prosecutor Julien Moinil warned that the danger to the public is significant, stating, “Everyone can be hit by a bullet.”

Recent incidents include multiple shots fired from automatic weapons, including an attack on a police station. Since 2025, approximately 170 shooting incidents have been recorded in Brussels, with 69 occurring this year alone. Last year, two people were killed in such acts of violence.

Moinil has called for tougher measures, including the arrest of gang leaders—many of whom reside abroad—and ensuring that incarcerated leaders cannot continue to organize violence from prison. He also emphasized the need for increased police resources for investigations.

Belgium serves as a major entry point for drug smuggling in Europe, with the Port of Antwerp acting as a central hub. In response to drug trafficking connections, authorities have closed around 350 bars and restaurants in Brussels and seized 3,500 luxury cars since 2025.
