BSW leadership discusses Sachsen-Anhalt government formation

During a BSW party congress in Leipzig, leadership from the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) addressed the ongoing government formation process in Sachsen-Anhalt. Federal Chair Amira Mohamed Ali emphasized that the party will decide on cooperation based on policy content rather than party affiliation, aiming to move past the political polarization surrounding the AfD. While Mohamed Ali explicitly ruled out a coalition with the AfD, General Secretary Oliver Ruhnert stated that the party would not categorically exclude cooperation if there are significant policy overlaps that benefit the public.

In Sachsen-Anhalt, the BSW holds a key role with five seats in the Landtag, where the AfD is the largest force with 39 seats. BSW representatives, including Claudia Wittig, have criticized the current political landscape as being too divided to function effectively, suggesting that the focus on the 'firewall' against the AfD hinders practical problem-solving. The party has proposed an above-party Minister President to break the deadlock.

Additionally, the BSW and AfD have found common ground in demanding a parliamentary inquiry into COVID-19 pandemic policies in Sachsen-Anhalt. While they differ on reforms for public broadcasting, their potential cooperation on this issue could provide the AfD with the necessary support to reach a majority for certain legislative decisions.
