Bucharest animal rescue: 1,180 stray dogs captured, metro cat saved

The Bucharest Authority for Animal Protection (ASPA) reported that more than 1,180 abandoned dogs were captured from public spaces in the capital during the first six months of the year. The operation, using modern non‑traumatic methods and sedation where needed, placed the dogs in ASPA shelters for medical care and possible adoption. Compared with the same period last year, the figure represents a roughly 6 % decline. The majority of captures occurred in Sector 1, with free sterilisation and microchipping campaigns running at Vet4Life (Sector 2) and a mobile clinic (Sector 6). A public adoption fair is scheduled for 11 July in Crângași Park.

In a separate incident, a kitten trapped in a flooded metro tunnel at Politehnica station was rescued after several days of effort by volunteers Laura Oporanu and Laura Enache, who enlisted Metrorex staff Ion Dobre and Tudor Tim Ionescu and other volunteers. The cat was recovered, taken to the Sache Vet association and is now under medical supervision. The rescue drew widespread attention on social media and sparked a wave of public support for the animals involved.
