Bucharest authorities report rise in dog sterilization and microchipping
The Bucharest Local Police and the Bucharest Animal Protection Authority (ASPA) report an increasing trend in pet owners sterilizing common breed dogs. During a recent inspection in the Ferentari neighborhood, authorities found that 67% of common breed dogs were sterilized, a figure that has doubled compared to two years ago.
Microchipping rates are also rising. Approximately 90% of purebred dogs and 75% of common breed dogs are now microchipped. Authorities emphasize that sterilization and microchipping are legal obligations intended to prevent uncontrolled breeding and animal abandonment.
In Sector 5, ASPA inspected 295 properties and spoke with 105 residents. Of these, 47 owners held 61 dogs. Officials issued notifications to owners not meeting legal requirements, providing a 30-day window to comply. The Bucharest City Hall continues to offer free sterilization campaigns through ASPA.
