A large-scale protest by Romanian sheep and livestock farmers in Bucharest escalated into violent clashes with law enforcement on Tuesday. The demonstrators gathered in Victory Square to protest against European Union-imposed bans on live animal exports due to disease outbreaks, as well as delays in receiving government compensation for slaughtered animals.

Violence broke out when groups of protesters, described by authorities as agitators or infiltrators, reportedly threw rocks, bottles, and metal barriers at riot police. Law enforcement responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds. The clashes resulted in at least 24 injuries, including eight gendarmes, with several individuals requiring hospitalization. Authorities detained approximately 47 people for antisocial behavior and various legal violations.

During the unrest, journalists covering the event were also reportedly assaulted, with one news team reporting physical attacks on their reporters and damage to equipment. Political leaders, including President Nicușor Dan and interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, condemned the violence, distinguishing between the legitimate economic grievances of the farmers and the unacceptable street fighting and vandalism. While organizers estimated potential attendance could reach 200,000, the immediate focus remains on the legal consequences for those detained and the government's response to the farmers' demands.
