Bucharest Metro Line 6 begins tunnel drilling for airport connection

Construction on Bucharest's Metro Line 6, which will connect the capital to Henri Coandă International Airport, has entered a new phase with the commencement of tunnel drilling on the northern section. Two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), named ‘Sfânta Parascheva’ and ‘Sfânta Ecaterina’, have been deployed for the task.

The drilling process will occur in two stages. Initially, the machines will excavate from the future Bruxelles station toward the Tokyo station, which serves as the connection point to the southern section of the line. Following this, the equipment will be redeployed from Bruxelles to drill toward Otopeni Airport.

The northern section of the line is expected to include six stations: Washington, Paris, Bruxelles, Otopeni, Ion I. C. Brătianu, and Henri Coandă International Airport. Currently, the northern section is 34% complete, while the southern section has reached a 78% physical completion stage. The entire 14-kilometer project is estimated to be finished in the first half of 2029.
