Piața Amzei pastry dispute sparks viral social media debate

A viral marketing dispute in Bucharest's Piața Amzei has sparked a widespread social debate regarding culinary traditions and social status. The controversy began when Edmond Niculușcă, co-founder of the restaurant La Mița Biciclista, posted a video criticizing the consumption of merdenele (traditional pastries made with margarine) in favor of high-end croissants made with butter.

Instead of promoting his establishment, the comments triggered a massive backlash on social media. Supporters of the traditional Patiseria Amzei organized symbolic protests and formed long queues to purchase merdenele, with some even carrying signs reading “Je suis merdenea”. The debate attracted high-profile figures, including Olympic swimmer David Popovici, who jokingly supported the traditional pastry, and Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu, who noted that the city has room for both products.

Following the intense online criticism, Niculușcă issued a public apology to the neighboring bakery. Patiseria Amzei also released a statement expressing gratitude for the community support and emphasizing their desire to avoid long-term rivalries. The incident has been characterized by sociologists as a reflection of deeper cultural tensions regarding identity and perceived social refinement in Romania.
