Bucharest's STB files for insolvency amid €1.7 billion debt
The Societatea de Transport București (STB) submitted a debtor's petition to the Bucharest Tribunal on 6 August, initiating insolvency proceedings. The filing lists debts of about 1.72 billion lei, primarily owed to the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF), with total exposure potentially reaching roughly 3 billion lei when other obligations are considered.
Mayor Ciprian Ciucu welcomed the move, saying it is the correct step to “decapitate” the company’s financial burden and will allow restructuring without interrupting bus, tram and trolleybus services. He assured that municipal investment in transport infrastructure will continue and that the procedure should protect employees’ salaries and the continuity of public transport.
If the court admits the request, the debts become claims under the insolvency process, enabling a judicial administrator to assess contracts, assets and possible restructuring measures while suspending enforcement actions.
