Péter Magyar and two MPs face immunity suspension requests

The Hungarian Prosecution Service has requested the lifting of parliamentary immunity for three MPs: Péter Magyar, Balázs Hankó, and Miklós Seszták. The requests involve distinct allegations ranging from a suspected theft to large-scale financial crimes.

Péter Magyar faces a theft investigation regarding an incident at the Ötkert nightclub in June 2024. Prosecutors allege Magyar took a man’s mobile phone during a dispute and threw it into the Danube. While originally investigated as vandalism or disorderly conduct, the charge has been reclassified as theft. Magyar has publicly requested the suspension of his own immunity, stating, “I have absolutely nothing to hide.”

Miklós Seszták is suspected of accepting bribes in connection with his official duties, an investigation involving alleged unlawful advantages exceeding 11 billion forints. Balázs Hankó is under investigation for breach of fiduciary duty related to the NKA scandal, which allegedly caused significant financial damage.

The simultaneous requests have sparked intense political debate regarding the impartiality of the prosecution and whether the timing is politically motivated. The Hungarian Parliament's Immunity Committee is scheduled to review the cases.
