WWII German motorcycle and soldiers recovered from Danube in Budapest
Record‑low water levels in the Danube near Budapest exposed a German World‑War‑II DKW NZ 350‑1 military motorcycle at Batthyány Square opposite the Hungarian Parliament. Specialists from the German War Graves Commission and the Hungarian Institute of Military History exhumed the vehicle and, beneath it, the remains of two German soldiers. The soldiers’ identification plates were found in exceptional condition, with letters and numbers still clearly legible, a preservation attributed to the river mud being mixed with gas‑oil. The site also yielded German Tellermine 35 anti‑tank mines, a Kuban war badge, a fuel can and other wartime munitions. The remains are to be reburied at the Budaörs war cemetery on the outskirts of Budapest. The discovery was made in early August 2026 as the Danube’s water level fell to a historic low.
