Budapest prepares for August 20 national holiday celebrations
Budapest is preparing for extensive celebrations for the August 20 national holiday, featuring a mix of traditional ceremonies and contemporary entertainment. The festivities include a major audiovisual show and a ten-minute fireworks display concentrated along a 1.5-kilometer stretch of the Danube between Margaret Bridge and the Chain Bridge.
Music programs are spread across several iconic locations. The University embankment will host electronic music performances by artists such as Carl Craig, Nina Kraviz, and Modeselektor. Kossuth Square will transform into a disco area with sets from Anima Sound System, while Margaret Island will offer family-oriented concerts featuring acts like Quimby and Boban Marković Orkestar.
Cultural and religious events are also scheduled, including the Protestant Majority gathering at the Buda Castle and various exhibitions at the Citadella and the Buda Castle District. Visitors are advised to plan ahead due to expected crowds, traffic restrictions, and the need for prior registration for certain exhibitions like the St. Stephen Hall. Retail operations will follow holiday schedules, with most major chains operating on Friday hours on August 21.
