Hungarian political and economic developments involve NKA funding and currency shifts
Several political and economic developments are unfolding in Hungary and Romania. In Hungary, the Integrity Authority (Integritás Hatóság) issued an apology after the name of the late politician Árpád János Potápi appeared on a high-risk asset declaration list. The authority explained that the list is compiled based on positions held between 2024 and 2026, which inadvertently included individuals who held office during that period but have since passed away.
Simultaneously, controversy surrounds the National Cultural Fund (NKA). Investigations indicate that over 600 million forints in NKA support were granted to organizations with ties to the Fidesz party in several counties. This has led to political tension, with the Patriots for Europe (PfE) group in the European Parliament planning to address the detention of Fidesz-linked politicians during an upcoming plenary session, characterizing the situation as a crackdown on opposition figures.
In the business sector, Kata Sarka has exited Top News Hungary Kft., a company behind the Twn.hu site that has generated billions of forints in profit. In Romania, the leu has hit a historic low against the euro, reaching 5.34 on the interbank market, amid political uncertainty and a significant drop in the National Bank of Romania's foreign exchange reserves.
