Hungarian National Cultural Fund corruption investigation

Overview

Political and legal tensions have escalated in Hungary regarding the management of the National Cultural Fund (NKA). Initial reports highlighted investigations into over 600 million forints in NKA support granted to organizations with ties to the Fidesz party, prompting the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament to characterize the situation as a crackdown on opposition figures.

Following allegations of a larger misuse of approximately 17.3 billion HUF, the situation intensified with the arrest of Balázs Hankó, the former minister responsible for culture and innovation. He is suspected of breach of trust in a criminal conspiracy causing significant financial loss. Prosecutors are investigating over 1,000 cases where funds may have been diverted for personal interests or the 2026 parliamentary election campaign.

In response, the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office launched an interactive database and map to track NKA grant distributions from 2021 to 2026. This platform aims to provide transparency regarding the amounts granted and the officials responsible for allocations, intended to ensure accountability during the ongoing investigations.
