Budapest plans revival of historic Danube bathhouses

Mayor Gergely Karoly has announced that the city intends to reconstruct the historic Danube‑side bathhouses in central Budapest during the current municipal term. A feasibility study, commissioned by the city council in 2024, was prepared with the participation of the Valyo – City and River Association. The study traces the origins of the floating wooden pools built between the 1810s and 1820s, such as the military swimming institute and the Scholtz pool, and highlights their cultural and social significance in the 19th‑century capital.

The proposed project aims to create a modern recreation facility that respects the historic character of the original structures while providing a new public amenity on the riverbank.
