Budapest police investigate disappearance of WWII explosive from Danube
The Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) has launched a criminal investigation after a reported World War II-era explosive disappeared from the bed of the Danube.
A man discovered a rusty, projectile-like object in the river mud near Nagytétényi Road and Tóth József Street, made visible by low water levels. He provided photographs of the item to the XXII. District police station. However, by the time officers arrived at the scene, the object had vanished. Authorities suspect that someone may have removed the item between the initial report and the police arrival.
Based on the photographs, police cannot rule out that the object is a World War II artillery grenade. An expert has been appointed to the case. The BRFK is investigating the suspected misuse of explosives or explosive materials and is requesting public assistance in locating the object.
Police have issued a stern warning to the public: if the object is found, do not touch, move, or attempt to disassemble it, as it could cause fatal injuries. Anyone with information is urged to contact emergency services via 112.
