Hungarian police launch safety campaign as e‑scooter accidents rise

The Budapest Police (BRFK) also issued a graphic warning, using a scythe‑symbol montage of reckless e‑scooter riding, and later removed the video from its Facebook page.

Hungarian authorities are preparing stricter rules for electric scooters ahead of a comprehensive traffic‑code (KRESZ) reform. Proposed measures include a minimum rider age of 12, mandatory helmets, speed limits of 10 km/h in bike lanes and 20 km/h elsewhere, and bans on carrying passengers or towing. Transport Minister David Vitézy cited a public survey in which most respondents support tougher enforcement against high‑speed riding and illegal competitions. The government aims to accelerate these regulations to curb the growing number of injuries, which now account for about 4 % of road accidents, most involving users under 25.
