Budapest evacuates area due to WWII explosive discovery

Authorities in Budapest's XVIII district have ordered a mandatory evacuation and area closure following the discovery of World War II-era explosives at a construction site on Üllői út 404. The find includes a 100-kilogram FAB-100 demolition bomb and 24 other explosive devices of varying types and sizes.

As part of civil protection measures, residents in specific buildings on Szent Lőrinc sétány (numbers 4 and 6) and along the section of Üllői út between Városház utca and Üllői út 495 must vacate their homes by 8:30 AM on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The area is expected to remain closed to pedestrians until 2:00 PM and to vehicle traffic until 2:00 PM.

Displaced residents are being provided shelter at the Rózsa Művelődési Ház. Public transportation is also affected, with the 50 tram and buses 236, 93, and 93A being diverted from the affected area during the operation.
