Budapest WWII bomb disposal and evacuations
Overview
A World War II-era Soviet FAB-100 demolition bomb was discovered at a construction site at 404 Üllői út in Budapest’s 18th district. Due to the explosive’s condition, experts determined it could not be safely transported and required on-site defusal.
On October 25, 2026, authorities expanded the scope of the danger, reporting that the find includes the 100-kilogram FAB-100 bomb along with “24 other explosive devices of varying types and sizes.”
Mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents in specific buildings on Szent Lőrinc sétány (numbers 4 and 6) and along Üllői út between Városház utca and Üllői út 495. Residents were instructed to vacate by 8:30 AM. The exclusion zone, which impacts pedestrian and vehicle traffic, is expected to remain closed until 2:00 PM. Displaced residents are being provided shelter at the Rózsa Művelődési Ház, while public transportation services, including the 50 tram and buses 236, 93, and 93A, have been diverted.
