Budapest schools transition to teacher and municipal ownership

Budapest School (BPS), founded in 2015 and expanded with about 600 million forints of investor capital, is preparing a major ownership change. The network’s investors will be bought out and the school's teachers, administrators and staff will form a new association that takes over the ownership and operational responsibilities of the BPS campuses.

In the city’s 18th district, Mayor Szaniszló Sándor posted that the local government will ask the national ministry to return maintenance and funding of its schools to the district. The move, supported by local council members, parents and teachers, aims to restore education programs and renovate aging school buildings, reflecting a broader push in Hungary toward more locally controlled school governance.

Both developments illustrate a shift away from centralized state or private investor control toward greater teacher and municipal involvement in school management.
