Budapest Stock Exchange faces volatility amid OTP Bank Russian exit considerations
The Budapest Stock Exchange has experienced significant volatility, driven largely by movements in major stocks and a gloomy international market sentiment. The BUX index saw notable fluctuations, impacted heavily by OTP Bank.
OTP Bank's stock performance has been a focal point due to reports that the bank is considering a complete withdrawal from the Russian market, where it derives nearly 20 percent of its profits. CEO Péter Csányi confirmed in an interview that while the bank remains committed to the potential acquisition of the Baltic-based Luminor group, it is also reviewing the situation regarding its Russian subsidiary. The bank is also monitoring expansion opportunities in Poland on an opportunistic basis.
Other major players also saw price shifts: Magyar Telekom and Richter experienced declines, while Mol shares saw moderate corrections. Additionally, the credit rating agency Scope Ratings downgraded Bayer Construct Zrt. to a 'D' (default) level for its issuer class and unsecured senior debt.
