Budapest to procure at least 250 electric buses by 2029

Budapest is preparing its largest ever electric‑bus programme, aiming to acquire a minimum of 250 new zero‑emission buses together with the required charging infrastructure. The plan, driven by the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) and BKV Zrt., is expected to be financed largely from European Union funds and will become Hungary’s biggest bus‑electrification project.

The new fleet will replace the city’s ageing diesel buses – currently over 400 vehicles, projected to exceed 600 by 2029 – with modern low‑floor electric models (midi, single‑deck and articulated). Existing electric services operate 54 buses, rising to 82 by 2027. The first of the newly purchased electric buses are slated to enter service in 2029, after extensive preparation of garages and charging stations that began in March 2026.
