Overview

In July 2026 Budapest announced its largest electric‑bus programme, targeting at least 250 zero‑emission buses and charging infrastructure by 2029, financed largely with EU funds. The same month Transport Minister David Vitézy unveiled a parallel rail scheme for state operator GYSEV: eleven new five‑car Stadler InterCity trainsets to replace the Budapest‑Győr‑Szombathely and Budapest‑Győr‑Sopron services, with delivery slated for 2028 and funding from an European Investment Bank loan co‑financed by Austria.

By the end of July, the first two trainsets were completed at Stadler’s plant in Siedlce, Poland, after their car bodies were built in Szolnok, Hungary. On 1 August the first InterCity FLIRT unit was formally handed over to GYSEV officials, marking the start of the 11‑train order. The new rolling stock will be climate‑controlled, low‑floor, fully barrier‑free and equipped with continuous video surveillance, and is expected to enter service from 2027. The programme also includes upgrades to long‑distance routes serving Debrecen, Miskolc, Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Pécs and Veszprém, underscoring Hungary’s broader push to modernise and decarbonise its public‑transport network with EU‑backed financing.
