Gorkha district flash flood destroys homes and bridges in Nepal

A sudden flash flood struck the Budhi Gandaki River in Nepal’s Gorkha district on Sunday morning, causing widespread destruction. The disaster, which occurred between 4:00 and 5:55 AM, was triggered by a landslide in Chumnubri village that temporarily blocked the river, creating a natural dam that eventually breached.

Authorities report that between 35 and 45 houses were swept away, and multiple bridges, including suspension and motor bridges, were destroyed or damaged. The flood also impacted several hydropower projects, damaging construction camps, equipment, and access roads.

The Nepal Army and emergency teams have conducted extensive rescue operations, saving between 49 and 95 people, including nine foreign nationals. While no fatalities have been confirmed, at least five people remain missing. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has issued alerts for residents along the Budhi Gandaki, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers, urging them to move to higher ground.
