Flooding and infrastructure damage in Nepal

Overview

Nepal has faced significant infrastructure challenges due to flooding and landslides. Initial efforts focused on repairing damaged roads and bridges, with the Department of Roads and the Nepal Army working to restore connectivity in areas like Nuwakot and the Galchhi-Syabrubesi section.

On October 11, 2026, a massive flash flood struck the Budhi Gandaki River in the Gorkha district. The disaster, triggered by landslides near Chumchure, Chumling, and Chumnubri around 4:00 AM to 4:35 AM, created a temporary dam that breached and released a torrent of mud and debris. This surge destroyed or severely damaged between 35 and 45 houses in villages including Payu, Bagar, Salleri, Jagat, Dhoban, and Ghattekhola.

Critical infrastructure has been heavily impacted, with at least six major bridges washed away, including a highway bridge connecting Gorkha to the Dhading district and multiple suspension structures. At least four hydropower projects in the basin, including the 341-MW Budhi Gandaki Hydropower Project, reported damage to equipment, construction camps, and access roads. Additionally, several power and communication towers have sustained damage.

While the Nepal Army has rescued between 49 and 95 people, including some foreign nationals, at least five people remain missing. No fatalities have been officially confirmed, but a health emergency center has been activated to provide medical assistance. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has ordered evacuations for residents in downstream areas, such as Arughat, Tanahun, and Chitwan, via SMS and loudspeakers, and has issued alerts for residents along the Budhi Gandaki, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is currently analyzing the event, noting the risks of cascading mountain hazards. This disaster follows devastating floods in August that resulted in over 1,400 deaths.
