Buenos Aires adds 12 new Bares Notables to its cultural heritage list

On 4 August, the City of Buenos Aires formally recognized twelve cafés, bars, billares and confiterías as part of the Bares Notables programme, bringing the total catalogue to ninety venues. The ceremony took place in the Salón Dorado of the Casa de la Cultura, where Culture Minister Gabriela Ricardes presented diplomas to representatives of the new sites: El Portuario, Josephina’s Café, Vía 71, Confitería El Greco, Bar Conde, La Escuela, La Orquídea, Plaza Café, Café Rivas, La Ópera, Boca a Boca and Café Cortázar. Selections are made by the Comisión de Protección y Promoción de los Cafés, Bares, Billares y Confiterías Notables based on age, architecture, cultural relevance and historic ties to their neighbourhoods.

The event also launched the documentary series “La Ruta de Los Notables”, which surveys iconic Buenos Aires cafés and bars, produced by the Asociación de Hoteles, Restaurantes, Confiterías y Cafés (AHRCC) with support from Fundación Santander. The series highlights the venues’ histories, patrons and role in the city’s cultural identity.
