Buenos Aires Legislature Approves $1.35 billion Funding for New Line F Subway
The City of Buenos Aires Legislature voted 56‑1 to allow the municipal government to borrow up to US$1.35 billion to finance construction of the new Line F subway. The financing will come from multilateral institutions, private banks and possible bond issuances. Line F will be 9.8 km long with 12 stations, linking the south and north of the city and integrating with existing lines and the Roca and San Martín railways. Work is slated to begin in January 2027 and is expected to last more than six years, marking the first subway expansion in 25 years.
Supporters, including legislator Waldo Wolff, emphasized that the project is not electoral but aimed at future generations. Opponents warned the loan would represent about 77 % of the city’s total debt and noted that the budget does not yet cover the estimated US$200‑300 million cost of rolling stock.
