Port of Algeciras approves special plan to expand service area
The Andalusian government has given final approval to the Special Plan for the Algeciras Bay Port service area in the municipality of Los Barrios. The plan covers 365,000 m² divided into three functional zones: a commercial area of 97,442 m² for solid bulk and general cargo, a larger zone of 254,420 m² for solid and liquid bulk and general cargo with a protective strip near the Guadarranque river, and a 12,925 m² reserve zone with limited recreational use. The plan aims to boost port activity, attract industrial projects linked to alternative fuels and the energy transition, and reinforce the port’s role as a key logistics hub in Southern Europe. The approved document completes a detailed urban‑planning instrument promoted by the Port Authority, aligning the new land use with national and regional regulations.
