Buenos Aires cuts 50% train‑subway transfer discount, raising commuter fares
The Buenos Aires public‑transport system Red SUBE eliminated the 50% discount that applied when passengers took a train first and then transferred to the Subte. Effective 1 August, riders must pay the full fare for both legs of the journey, even if the transfer occurs within the two‑hour window. The change coincides with a base Subte fare increase to AR$1.684.
The measure affects thousands of daily commuters from the Gran Buenos Aires and Conurbano regions who rely on combined train‑Subte trips to reach the city. Officials noted the loss of integration discourages multimodal travel and raises daily mobility costs for workers and students. Infrastructure Minister Pablo Bereciartua said the subsidy structure represents a significant expense for the city, while Governor Jorge Macri pledged efforts to keep overall passenger fares from soaring despite the added subsidy burden.
