Buenos Aires government rejects union severance demands

Tensions have escalated between the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and the Camioneros union regarding severance payments for waste collection workers. The administration of Jorge Macri has confirmed that it will not include these severance benefits in new waste collection contracts, a move that affects an estimated 200 million dollars.

Pablo Moyano, leader of the Camioneros union, has threatened strikes, assemblies, and marches to defend these payments. The union's demand is based on a long-standing practice where companies changing concessions or shareholders must dismiss and rehire staff with full severance, a practice the government describes as a privilege without legal basis.

While the new bidding processes will not include these payments, the city government clarified that severance required under the current contract, which expires in 2028, will still be honored as per existing legislation. Additionally, the city has warned it will sanction collection companies that fail to complete their routes during union protests.
