Buenos Aires Governor Kicillof Takes Pension Funding Dispute to Supreme Court

Governor Axel Kicillof of Buenos Aires closed the conciliatory phase of a dispute with the national government after the Ministry of Economy failed to present a payment proposal. The province will now seek a precautionary measure before the Supreme Court to recover more than $2.3 trillion in pension transfers owed by the National Social Security Administration (ANSES), and it claims the total deficit exceeds $22 trillion when lost revenues are included.

The move follows the third Supreme Court hearing on the case, where Kicillof criticised President Javier Milei’s administration for paying other jurisdictions while Buenos Aires remains unfunded. Provincial officials stressed that the shortfall represents roughly half of the province’s annual budget, threatening public services and infrastructure spending.
