Spain's household credit climbs in June, mortgage debt up 4.1%

In June, total credit granted to Spanish households and non‑profit institutions reached €719.878 billion, a 1.3 % increase over the same month a year earlier, according to the Bank of Spain. Mortgage lending continued to dominate, with the outstanding mortgage balance rising to €527.669 billion – a 4.1 % year‑on‑year growth and representing roughly two‑thirds of household debt. Consumer credit also expanded, climbing 11.04 % year‑on‑year to €120.437 billion, while loans for other purposes fell 27.2 % to €66.852 billion.

A separate analysis shows that borrowing to fund summer vacations has surged dramatically, with the amount of credit used for holiday expenses more than doubling over the past decade – a 114 % increase from €3.5 billion in 2015 to €7.5 billion in 2025. Economists warn that the growing reliance on credit to cover everyday expenses could pose financial risks for many families.

The Bank of Spain noted methodological changes from April 2026 that exclude advance payments from the credit‑to‑households category, affecting how growth rates are calculated.
