Governor Axel Kicillof confronts opposition over food‑aid suspension and backs indefinite re‑elections

The Buenos Aires provincial government formally extended the suspension of the Módulo Extraordinario para la Seguridad Alimentaria Bonaerense (MESA) until 31 January 2027, halting food assistance for more than two million families. Lawmakers from La Libertad Avanza (LLA) – led by deputy Sebastián Pareja and Senate block chief Carlos Curestis – demanded a detailed report on the reasons for the suspension, the number of beneficiaries, the budget impact and any alternatives for affected families.

At the same time, Governor Axel Kicillof is advancing a legislative initiative to restore indefinite re‑elections for mayors and councilors, a project introduced in the Senate by Ayelén Durán and supported by members of his administration. Kicillof has kept the decision on whether to separate the province’s 2027 elections from the national vote pending the outcome of national negotiations on the Primarias Abiertas, Simultáneas y Obligatorias (PASO).

Eleven Peronist mayors formed the Liga de Intendentes and met with Kicillof to discuss their role in provincial politics and the upcoming electoral calendar, signalling a broader coalition around the governor’s agenda.
