Axel Kicillof emerges as key opposition figure amid Peronist reorganization

Political tensions are escalating in Argentina as leaders within the Peronist movement consolidate power ahead of the 2027 elections. Governor Axel Kicillof has emerged as a primary opposition figure, with recent polling showing him surpassing Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in positive image ratings and positioning him as a top contender against President Javier Milei.

Kicillof has intensified his criticism of the Milei administration, specifically accusing the national government of misappropriating fuel tax revenues intended for road maintenance. He described the state of national highways as being in an “unprecedented state of abandonment.”

Simultaneously, Peronist figures are organizing territorial movements. Fernando Espinoza, president of the Argentine Federation of Municipalities, has begun a series of plenaries across the Buenos Aires province to strengthen regional ties and promote an alternative to the current national administration. Within the provincial government, discussions regarding Kicillof’s eventual successor are already surfacing, with figures such as Julio Alak and Jorge Ferraresi engaging in increased territorial activity.
