Buenos Aires Pride faces potential ban due to papal visit

Authorities in Buenos Aires are attempting to postpone or ban the city’s traditional Pride march, scheduled for November 7, due to the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV from November 8 to 11. A city resolution aims to prohibit large-scale public events between November 6 and 13 to manage the security, traffic, and logistical demands of the papal visit.

Organizers of the Pride event have resisted the proposal to move the march to November 21, arguing that the event occurs before the Pope’s arrival and that logistics could be coordinated rather than canceling the tradition. They noted that many participants have already made travel and accommodation arrangements. The conflict comes amid heightened tensions regarding LGBTQ+ rights in Argentina under the administration of President Javier Milei.

While organizers initially insisted on maintaining the original date, Mayor Jorge Macri indicated that some organizations may have reached an understanding regarding a postponement.
