Pope Leo XIV 2026: South America tour and summer Angelus
Overview
Vatican officials continue discreet preparations for Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural South‑American pilgrimage. A draft three‑day program for Buenos Aires, backed by Cardinal Ángel Sixto Rossi, envisions a meeting with President Javier Milei, a mass on Avenida 9 de Julio and a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján. Milei has adopted a conciliatory tone, urging allies not to confront Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva.
The pontiff’s July summer residence at Castel Gandolfo runs from 5 July to 27 July, with audiences suspended until 5 August. Each Sunday the Angelus is recited from the papal residence; on 12 July a large crowd of pilgrims from Italy, Slovakia, Colombia and elsewhere gathered in the town square. Leo reflected on the parable of the sower, greeted the faithful from a motorized buggy, and made personal contact with the assembled devotees.
On 11 July the “Lunch with the Pope” welcomed about 200 socially vulnerable guests, including migrants and single mothers, into the Borgo Laudato Si’ garden. Leo spoke extemporaneously about being a “bridge‑builder” while Cardinal Fabio Baggio celebrated Mass.
In Peru a national contest chose the song “León, hermano del camino” as the anthem for Leo’s November visit; its composer will perform the piece before the Pope.
Cardinal Daniel Sturla announced that the November tour will also include Uruguay, with a possible early‑ to mid‑November window. Preparations have begun after an apostolic delegation visited Montevideo, the Florida sanctuary of the Virgen de los Treinta y Tres, and Paysandú. The Pope is expected to land at Carrasco International Airport, celebrate Mass in Florida on 8 November, and possibly celebrate another Mass at Estadio Centenario, meeting President Yamandú Orsi but not attending a parliamentary session. An official Vatican statement is anticipated by the end of July.
