Buenos Aires province faces stalled sewer plant and costly interest payments amid federal credit block

The national government led by President Javier Milei refused to guarantee a US$270 million international loan intended for a large sewage‑treatment plant serving La Plata, Berisso and Ensenada. The project, designed to provide service to more than 1.3 million residents for the next 50 years, was halted after the denial, leaving a key infrastructure effort stalled.

At the same time, the provincial administration of Governor Axel Kicillof spent roughly 1.265 billion Argentine pesos on interest charges incurred from late payments to suppliers and work certificates, according to the provincial Treasury and the Tribunal de Cuentas. Officials noted that the money could have been allocated to health, education, security or other infrastructure needs.
