Buenos Aires launches hydrometeorological monitor to combat El Niño risks
The Government of the Province of Buenos Aires has launched the new Hydrometeorological Visor, a digital platform designed to monitor rainfall, water levels, and river flows in real time. Developed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Services through the Water Authority (ADA), the tool integrates data from 150 monitoring stations across 135 municipalities to assist in risk prevention and decision-making.
The initiative comes as authorities prepare for the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to increase precipitation and flood risks in the Salado River basin. During a meeting of the Salado River Basin Committee in Bragado, officials including Ministers Gabriel Katopodis and Javier Rodríguez emphasized the need for inter-jurisdictional coordination and structural infrastructure investment to mitigate water-related emergencies.
In addition to the new digital tool, provincial authorities are focusing on preventive maintenance, such as cleaning canals and rural roads, and advancing the Salado River Master Plan. This plan aims to protect over 1.5 million inhabitants across 59 municipalities from the effects of droughts and floods.
