El Niño flood risk management in Argentina

Overview

Authorities in Argentina have introduced digital tools to monitor and mitigate flooding risks associated with the El Niño phenomenon. In Buenos Aires, the provincial government launched a Hydrometeorological Visor, a platform integrating data from 150 monitoring stations to track rainfall and river flows, particularly within the Salado River basin. This initiative is part of a broader strategy involving infrastructure maintenance and the Salado River Master Plan to protect approximately 1.5 million residents.

In Gran Resistencia, a different digital platform was introduced to allow residents to map their specific risk levels and coordinate local defense efforts. This development coincided with political criticism regarding the provincial government’s response to rising water levels in the Negro River, specifically in neighborhoods such as Los Teros and Las Flores. Legislative efforts have also been proposed to mandate the dissemination of evacuation plans and to address the intersection of flooding and land tenure insecurity in peripheral settlements.
