Buenos Aires reopens Piedras subway station after extensive renovation

The Piedras station on Buenos Aires' Line A subway reopened on Monday, 8 June 2026, after a comprehensive upgrade under the city’s Integral Station Renovation Plan. Works improved accessibility with new LED lighting, upgraded signage, braille markings on handrails and platforms, and new benches, waste bins and wheelchair‑friendly supports. Preservation specialists restored the historic “Café Tortoni” mural and replaced more than 93 000 ceramic tiles, while original German‑made iron railings, metal signage and historic flooring were conserved.

The upgrade is part of a larger programme that has already revitalised 20 stations across lines A, B, C, D and E, with further works continuing at other sites. The city also announced parallel projects, including the tender for the future Line F, the purchase of 224 new trains for Line B and upgrades to escalators and elevators throughout the network.
