Buenos Aires Senator proposes climate emergency declaration
Senator Malena Galmarini of the Fuerza Patria bloc has introduced a bill in the Buenos Aires Senate to declare a climate emergency throughout the province. The proposal aims to create a legal framework for Governor Axel Kicillof’s administration to implement prevention, mitigation, and recovery measures in response to the imminent arrival of the ‘Super Niño’ phenomenon.
Citing data from the National Meteorological Service (SMN), Galmarini warned that the probability of this climate event reaching a ‘very strong’ magnitude is increasing significantly. The proposed emergency would last for an initial period of 180 days, with the possibility of a 180-day extension via a new decree.
Under the bill, the provincial executive would be authorized to execute urgent works and contract necessary goods and services to protect lives, health, and essential services. Additionally, the legislation includes provisions for economic assistance and subsidies for affected individuals, families, municipalities, businesses, small and medium-sized enterprises, and agricultural producers.
