Bui River flooding forces evacuations in Hanoi

Severe flooding of the Bui River in Hanoi has caused water levels to exceed Alarm Level 3, leading to dike breaches and widespread evacuations in the Xuan Mai and Tran Phu communes.

In Xuan Mai, water levels reached 7.64 meters on September 18, submerging approximately 6.1 km of dikes. The flooding has affected roughly 1,659 households, impacting about 3,615 people. Authorities have prioritized the relocation of 626 vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, children, and pregnant women, to safer areas.

In Tran Phu, water levels at the Yen Duyet station rose to 7.88 meters by the morning of September 19, surpassing Alarm Level 3 by 0.88 meters. The rising waters have damaged significant agricultural areas, including 70 hectares of rice, 12 hectares of vegetables, 16 hectares of fruit trees, and 15 hectares of aquaculture. At least 134 households have been forced to relocate, with many residents being moved to local school facilities. Local authorities have mobilized military and police forces to assist with evacuations, maintain security, and manage traffic in dangerous areas.
