Bulgaria and Serbia agree to open new seasonal Kalotina border crossing

Bulgaria and Serbia will sign an intergovernmental agreement to open a new joint border control point, Kalotina 2 – Gradina 2. The facility will be built on the Bulgarian side near the existing Kalotina checkpoint and will serve pedestrians and light vehicles with seasonal operating hours, aiming to ease congestion during peak travel periods. The signing follows a meeting between Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev and his Serbian counterpart Ivica Dačić.

The new crossing is intended to supplement the main checkpoint, not replace it, and is expected to improve travel for tourists, families and small‑business traffic, especially during holidays and high‑traffic seasons. It reflects broader efforts to streamline the busiest land border between the two EU and NATO members.

The project received positive feedback from the European Commission and will involve coordinated infrastructure work on both sides of the border.
