By mid‑July 2026 the Entry/Exit System (EES) continues to generate long queues at Schengen borders, with waiting times of up to five hours reported at major airports such as Amsterdam, Milan, Madrid and Paris. The slowdown now also affects non‑EU passengers, especially British travellers, whose passport‑control processing has risen from about 7 minutes to roughly 20 minutes and whose queues of one to two hours have been reported at Rome‑Fiumicino, Faro and Barcelona. Ryanair has warned families and other passengers to allow extra time, describing the rollout as a “failed EES rollout”. Airport officials blame software bugs in self‑service kiosks and limited staffing, while the European Commission says disruptions remain limited at most airports and pledges continued support to member states. France’s interior ministry reports no major congestion in its airports. The electronic travel authorisation system (ETIAS) remains slated for launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, with a €20 fee and exemptions for travellers under 18, over 70 and certain family members of EU citizens, despite earlier German statements pushing implementation to April 2027 because of EES technical problems. Travel operators are adjusting to the bottlenecks. Serbian agency Star Tours has expanded its one‑day tour packages to Italy, Croatia, Romania, Slovenia and domestic sites, highlighting Cyprus and Ireland—countries not required to implement EES—as hassle‑free alternatives for summer holidays. In the United Kingdom, opposition politicians and the Liberal Democrat foreign‑affairs spokesperson have urged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ask EU leaders to suspend the EES until at least September, calling the system “poorly designed, non‑functional” and “catastrophic”. The British Association of Travel Agents warned that the busiest weekend of the summer tourist season, with an estimated 2.2 million Britons travelling, could be disrupted.
