Bulgaria and US strengthen AI, defense, and economic ties

Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Alexander Pulev visited Washington to strengthen strategic partnerships with the United States. During the visit, Pulev signed a joint declaration for partnership in artificial intelligence, an initiative involving 54 countries aimed at fostering innovation, secure digital infrastructure, and reliable supply chains.

In addition to AI, discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation, particularly in high technologies and defense. Pulev highlighted Bulgaria's readiness for joint production and investment in the defense sector, emphasizing the country's strategic location and its role as a logistics and energy hub in the Black Sea region. The meetings also covered the implementation of the F-16 Block 70 fighter jet program and cooperation in space and satellite technologies.

Separately, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has extended general licenses for several Lukoil entities operating in Bulgaria. The extension, valid until April 24, 2027, allows continued operations for Lukoil Bulgaria, Lukoil Neftohim Burgas, Lukoil Aviation Bulgaria, and Lukoil Bunker Bulgaria. This measure is intended to ensure supply security and market stability while Lukoil continues efforts to find a buyer for its international assets following US sanctions imposed due to the war in Ukraine.
