Bulgaria announces major financial aid package for farmers

Bulgaria's Ministry of Agriculture is preparing a significant financial package using both national and European funds to support the country's agricultural sector. Minister Plamen Abrovski announced that approximately 45 million euros in extraordinary aid will be directed toward sensitive sectors, specifically fruits, vegetables, and livestock.

An additional 85 million euros is earmarked for producers who have experienced an income drop of at least 30% due to adverse events over the last two years. Payments are scheduled to begin in early January, with the ministry aiming to distribute funds during the winter and spring to assist with purchasing seeds and fertilizers.

The broader financial support includes: - 170 million euros for fuel compensation (100 million) and fertilizers (70 million). - 35 million euros for crisis management, with an ambition to provide 30% as an advance. - 300 million euros for direct payments and standard subsidies.

The announcement follows protests by farmers in the Sliven region, who cited low purchase prices and difficulties in selling produce. Minister Abrovski noted that a lack of processing facilities and market monopolies contribute to these challenges.
