Bulgaria boosts airspace and Besmer airport security

Following a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Rumen Radev, Bulgaria announced enhanced protection for its national airspace and the military airfield at Besmer. The meeting involved Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, Transport Minister Georgi Peev, and senior officials from the State Agency for National Security and the Military Police. Measures include tighter surveillance, coordination with NATO partners, and continuous information exchange to monitor escalations in the Middle East and Ukraine. No immediate threat to national security was reported.

A U.S. KC-135 Stratotanker arrived at Besmer, described as a “flying fuel station,” underscoring the cooperation with allied forces. Iran’s foreign ministry criticized the decision to permit the American refueling aircraft on Bulgarian bases.
