Bulgaria closes unsafe seaside children's camp after safety inspections

Inspectors from the Ministry of Tourism, the Consumer Protection Commission, the Bulgarian Agency for Food Safety, regional health authorities and police carried out joint inspections of children’s camps along the Black Sea. At a private tourist facility in Ravda they discovered serious violations, including food past its expiry date, lack of documentation on food origin, exposed wiring, rotting balcony rails and heavily corroded metal structures. The violations prompted the withdrawal of 17 children aged 10 to 14 from the camp and the immediate closure of the site.

Overall, officials have inspected 18 camp sites, identifying 11 significant breaches and issuing four minor corrective orders related to building maintenance and categorisation. The director of the Control and Inspection Directorate at the Ministry of Tourism, Ivan Videlov, said the agencies act swiftly when a risk to children’s health and safety is found. Ongoing checks will continue throughout the summer season, covering schools, winter camps and additional tourist facilities.
